NGTB is in final process of setting up various courses for the public which will include theory and field training in Northern Botswana – NGTB will update you once finalized.
Summer in northern Botswana erupts with diverse species of fauna and flora which allows for fascinating insights to nature.
Honey Hunters Ladder to Beehive entrance
During one course in the central eastern part of the Okavango, we came across the above scene. The mature Mopane tree had grown around the top end of what seemed like a leadwood stump, purposefully propped against the tee. Under further investigation, we noticed the definite axe marks around a hole further up the Mopane tree trunk. This was clear signs that honey hunters were responsible for this which is a common occurrence in many parts of Africa. In this case, the honey harvest must have taken place many, many years ago as the ladder propped up to get to the beehive entrance, had now become part of the mature Mopane tree which grew around the top end of the ladder.
